Emmanuela Cascio is born and baptized 8 November 1802 in Corleone, named after her paternal grandmother. She is the daughter of Francesco Cascio and Maria Vintaloro. Her godparents are Don Leoluca and Emmanuela Guarneri, brother and sister.
In the Church census of 1807, called a stato delle anime, Emmanuela, age five (b. 1802), lives with her parents, sisters, and a relative of unknown relation, at the entrance to the strada di Russo in Corleone.
Emmanuela marries Mariano Pennino on 26 April 1818. Her parents are both still living at this time.[1]
Emmanuela and Mariano have at least seven children: Giuseppa Maria (1819), Ciro (1820), Anna Maria (1823), two sons named Leoluca (1826 and 1827), Maria (1831), and Carmela (1835).
Giuseppa Maria is born and baptized on 2 February 1819. Her godparents are Giuseppe and Anna di Liberto, a married couple. Although she is their first born child, she is not named after either of her grandmothers, Anna or Maria.
Ciro is born and baptized on 13 November 1820, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Sebastiano and Domenica Finocchio, a married couple.
Anna Maria is born and baptized on 23 July 1823. Her godparents are Bernardo and Giuseppa Mancuso, a married couple. Anna Maria may be named in honor of both Anna, Mariano's mother, and Maria, Emmanuela's mother.
The first son named Leoluca is born and baptized on 8 March 1826. His godparents are Vito Cilano and Maria Rosa Mischitta, who is not married ("inn(a)" is "innupta," the singular feminine). He dies on 26 November 1826 at eight months of age.
The second son named Leoluca is born and baptized on 25 October 1827. His godparents are Domenico and Leochina di Frisco, a married couple.
Maria is born and baptized 17 February 1831. Her godparents are Antonino Arsena and Emmanuela's sister, Rosa Castro, who are not married.
Carmela is born and baptized on 18 September 1835, named after another of Emmanuela's sisters. Her godparents are Ciro and Carmela Merendino, a married couple.
Maria dies at age seven (b. 1830) on 17 July 1837, at the height of the first recorded cholera outbreak in western Europe. The record of her death calls her mother Anna Maria.
Leoluca dies on 20 July at age nine. His death record also makes the common error of calling their mother, Emmanuela, Anna Maria.
Emmanuela dies nine days later, reportedly at age 40 (she is 34) on 29 July.
The same day, her daughter, Carmela, dies at age two.
